He is a prolific writer and has a bi-monthly column, Competitive Strategy, in EM Magazine, and a column, Environmental Leadership, in the John Wiley & Sons' journal Environmental Quality Management. He publishes in other magazines and journals such as
Richard also serves as the Director of the Center for Environmental Innovation, Inc. (CEI), a collaborative effort among a number of leading university researchers on environmental issues. CEI’s mission is to provide credible research on sensitive EHS issues and to encourage innovation in corporate EHS programs. Richard is currently an Adjunct Professor at Arizona State University in the School of Business. Richard received a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University. He began his career in 1969 as a petroleum research engineer with Shell Oil Company in Houston, Texas. In 1972 he became the Manager of Safety and Environmental Engineering for Raychem Corporation, a producer of products for the electronics industry located in Menlo Park, California. Richard joined General Electric in 1976 where he held a number of environmental, health and safety (EHS) management positions in the Plastics Business Group. In 1986 he was named Manager of Environmental Protection at Corporate Environmental Programs in Fairfield, CT where he was responsible for the design and implementation of environmental policies for GE's world-wide operations. In 1991 he joined Arizona Public Service as Vice President, Environmental Health & Safety. In addition to leading the Company's EHS programs, he was responsible for the Company's research and development activities on environmentally clean technologies such as solar power and electric vehicles.
